To enhance environmental and sanitation awareness among youth, a research team from the Research Center for Environmental Technology and Clean Technology at BRIN (the National Research and Innovation Agency) implemented a climate action initiative involving approximately 100 students from SMA Negeri 16 Bandung. This activity formed part of the research project entitled “From Toilets to Climate Action: Empowering School Students to Address Carbon Emissions in Sanitation,” which was supported by NEDO, Japan.
Under the supervision of the BRIN research team, led by Dr. rer. nat. Neni Sintawardani, the students were organized into 20 groups and carried out a household survey in randomly selected residences surrounding their school area in Babakan Sari sub district, Kiaracondong District, Bandung City, West Java. The survey sought to assess domestic sanitation conditions through systematic data collection, direct observation of household sanitation facilities, and mapping of water flow patterns within the designated area.
The outcomes of this initiative were subsequently showcased at the SaniCamp 2025 forum, a collaborative program between BRIN, FSM-Aman and the Hokkaido Research Organization (HRO Japan. Conducted virtually on December 12, 2025, the forum brought together the youth from multiple educational institutions and communities, including the Furano High School Science Club and Tomikawa High School in Hokkaido, Japan; SMA Negeri 16 Bandung in Indonesia; and the Dziko Langa sanitation community in Lusaka, Zambia. During the forum, each group presented findings from their respective sanitation- and environment-related activities, followed by interactive discussions in which participants actively exchanged perspectives and insights on sanitation challenges. The students from SMAN 16 Bandung brought the topic of carbon emission related to sanitation for their presentation.
As an educational platform designed to engage the younger generation, this activity is expected to enhance awareness and foster critical thinking regarding sanitation and environmental issues within their local contexts. By encouraging dialogue, reflection, and knowledge sharing across different regions and cultures, the program contributes to building a more informed and environmentally responsible generation.
